Cedar RapidsIowa City PTDN  History

The first PTDN was established in 1997 by Jonathan Stuts of Microsoft to assist companies struggling to recruit, hire and retain a diverse workforce. Today, PTDN Chapters have been established in Seattle, San Francisco, Palo Alto, San Jose, Minneapolis and Cedar Rapids/Iowa City.

The Eastern Iowa PTDN was formed in April 2000 as an affiliate of the national PTDN organization formed in 1999 in Seattle, Washington.

The formation of the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City PTDN Chapter was launched by Rockwell Collins CEO, Clay Jones, at the Professional Women's Network meeting held on February 25, 2000.  The first Power Networking Event was sponsored by Rockwell Collins with special guest, Lt. Governor Sally Pederson.

Corridor Welcome & Networking Events

Throughout the year, PTDN sponsors Corridor Welcoming Receptions.  These activities provide opportunities to build relationships and promote professional growth through networking.  Welcoming Receptions typically include a short program and refreshments.  Previous receptions have featured representatives of state and local government, diverse community organizations and leaders of prominent employers.

"Third Places" Events

Our lives have three “Places”: the home, the workplace, and “Third Places.”  PTDN hosts “Third Places” events at interesting facilities in the Corridor where attendees can meet and network with new friends in an informal, friendly environment.  We try to pick places we feel help celebrate the diversity of our community.  We schedule PTDN “Third Place” Events targeting the 1st Monday of the month in Cedar Rapids, and the 3rd Monday of the month in Iowa City, starting at 5:00 PM.  Our hosts graciously agree to reserve an area of their establishments for us to gather, and/or extend their hours for us. Refreshments are generally available from our hosts.
